About Summiteer

~Higherford to Gisburn~

18th July 2009

Part 2 of the long walk from home to the Lake District. There's is a little overlap here as the bus from home goes only as far as Higherford, not Blacko my destination last time. So I found a different way from Higherford to Blacko, so as to see some different things ....

Weets Hill Summit

Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk

Barleydale Road, Barrowford

First photo at 10:04 of a quiet lane in Barrowford, leading to some fine properties.

Water Meetings (just out of sight)

Admergill

I am in Admergill, a quiet little valley with a number of farm buildings. The Moorcock Inn is the white building in the distance and the A682 runs behind the wall high up the valley side on the right.

Looking Back and Blacko Tower

Shame about the grey skies, but at least it's not raining.

A682 Moorcock Inn

The Moorcock Inn is open for business, it's the white building nearest the camera. Further away is Greystones, a former pub, now split into houses.

Sandyford Farm

The Summit of Weets Hill

Pendle Hill is in the background. Weets Hill is today's highest point at 1,302ft asl. East Lancashire's Three Peaks are: Pendle Hill, Weets Hill and Boulsworth Hill.

Lane Side

Coal Pit Lane

Gisburn

The church of St.Mary the Virgin is clearly seen and a little further away is Gisburne Park Hospital, a private hospital for the well-to-do.

End of Part 2

The roadside sign says Long Preston 7, Settle is about 4 miles further on. I'll either have to walk to Long Preston and back to Gisburn or get as far as Settle and then get a train to Skipton and bus to Gisburn. This next leg is a bit difficult logistically, not least because the Ribble Way runs along the pavement-less A682 for a mile or so from this junction.

Walkers: Just Me

Time taken: 3hrs 30 minutes over a distance of about 7 miles. Son Gary picked me up in Gisburn and ferried me back to Burnley. About 7 miles.

Route: Higherford, Water Meetings, Blacko, Admergill, Gisburn Old Road, Weets Hill, Coal Pit Lane, Gisburn.

Weather and conditions: Cloudy, a few bright spells

Greetings Count: Lower than Very Low, didn't greet anyone.

Richard's Refreshment Review: Nothing to report today, which is a shame as there is a little cafe in Gisburn which I must take a look at some time.
